The First Year: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly – (Chapter: 3-First Day: Nikki)
We hoped into my brand-new 2004 silver Porshe’ Roadster at about a quarter to eight that morning, I dropped her off at her place, and promptly sped off to my new precinct, assignment, and finally I was going to be assigned a partner for the first time ever.
I strolled through the gate at 7:54 am, up the stairs, right into the glorious station house’s front doors. I already knew where I’d be going, I had been told at my ceremony for receiving my gold badge by my soon-to-be captain, who was being recognized, also, for his promotion . I’d be reporting to the lieutenant’s office promptly at 8 am to begin my first shift. I had no idea who would be my partner, and I really don’t care, I just hope we can at least be civil towards each other. See veteran detectives that have to partner up again are not very open and receptive towards their new partners, especially if they are new to the whole plain clothes, gold badge carrying detail.
If, I get a "old school" detective then I am surely going to be treated with a ‘at arms length’ trust that will be long and hard to overcome. These kind of old, hard-chargers are all the same. They never appreciate that you’ll work just as hard, if not harder, as they do to get scum off the streets/help the helpless in any way you can-even if, it’s above and beyond/and that your heart receives a huge boost from children wanting to spend sometime telling you about how they want to be police officers when they grow up and all because they see your badge. I’ve heard rumors about how these old curmudgeons being so stick-in-the-mud boring that they can no longer appreciate youthful exuberance and they frown upon any exhibitions of actually living one’s life to the fullest. I just hope my partner is not butt-***** ugly, has some kind of sense of humor, and can actually smile without their faces falling off.
Outside my departments entrance and just out of sight of anyone in the area, I checked that my sidearm was secure and within reach underneath my leather duster jacket, then I proceed to make sure my gold badge was gleaming, straight, and well-within sight directly to the left of my belt buckle, and my clothing was clearly clean, crisp, and straighten. I adjust my body to it’s full, tall, and confident stature and squared my shoulders and walked proudly through the door to my new assignment. Noticing the clock on the far wall, I could tell I’d just be right on time, without a second to spare. As I began to make my way towards the lieutenant’s office I could already see the door was left ajar and my new boss was sitting behind his desk, leaning back in his office chair with his elbows resting on the armrest, hands clasped, and looking stoically up at a figure; that was leaning over his desk with arms supporting it and from the movements within the one arm I could clearly make-out it this person was not in the least bit happy. God help me, if this was my new partner.
